Dean Strang

Morning Docket

Morning Docket: 08.03.20

* A lawyer who was featured in the Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer has been unable to shake his conviction for violating a restraining order. Maybe he should have had "dreamy" Dean Strang defend him... [ABA Journal] * A study has found that the number of lawyer jobs may have decreased by over 15% in the past six months. [Bloomberg Law] * A group of voters have filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent the Trump Administration from excluding undocumented immigrants from the census. [Jurist] * Michael Avenatti will receive a taxpayer-funded lawyer in one of his criminal cases after claiming he did not have the financial resources to pay his own counsel. [Fox News] * The Supreme Court has denied the request of environmentalists to stop the Trump Administration from building a southern border wall. The justices didn't rule if Mexico needs to pay for it... [ABC News]

Non-Sequiturs

Non-Sequiturs: 07.29.16

* You know who no one talked about at that convention? Merrick Garland. Here's a theory as to why... [Fortune] * This is how easily a Supreme Court vacancy is handled in a civilized country. [Legal Cheek] * French court says Lockout was plagiarized from Escape From New York. I thought it was a little suspicious that Lockout followed the adventures of Lizard Flissken. [io9] * What is the proper choice of law for space crimes? Um, pretty sure it's Judge Dredd, but you write up your little piece anyway. [Seeker] * Becoming addicted to Biglaw power. [Law and More]

Morning Docket

Morning Docket: 01.21.16

* Criminal defense attorneys have been painted so poorly by Hollywood for such a long time that Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, the defense attorneys at the heart of Making a Murderer, "never expected to be viewed as hero[es] for just doing our job." [WSJ Law Blog] * All in a day's work: When Ted Cruz wasn't busy “[making] a lot of people really angry” during his Supreme Court clerkship, he was watching porn with Chief Justice William Rennquist and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. [New York Times] * It seems like Ted Cruz has made prospective Biglaw donors angry as well. Although Sullivan & Cromwell hosted an event in his honor, his campaign contribution amounts from other firms are "humdrum," with only one Texas firm on his side. [The Careerist] * Thanks to a $25 million dollar donation from an alumnus, Villanova Law will now be known as the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law. Hopefully a new name will make people forget about the school's scandal-plagued past. [Philadelphia Inquirer] * In light of last week's sexism sanction from a federal judge, the editors of the ABA Journal want to know if you've ever heard sexist remarks while working as a lawyer. We'd like to know too. Email us for inclusion in our series on the subject. [ABA Journal]

* If you haven't been watching Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer, then you're missing Dean Strang's turn on the catwalk. The compassionate defense attorney has turned into an "unlikely sex symbol." Are you part of the #StrangGang? [The Guardian] * Sometime later today, President Barack Obama will announce a sweeping package of executive actions related to gun restrictions. Stay tuned, grab your popcorn, and get ready for some hardcore constitutional litigation. [Washington Post] * Happy New Year! We're not even a full week into 2016, and the first Biglaw merger has already been announced. Lewis Roca Rothgerber has picked up Christie Parker & Hale, a 40-lawyer Southern California IP boutique. [Big Law Business / Bloomberg BNA] * Hipsters, thou shall be avenged sevenfold: The Justice Department has filed suit against Volkswagen in the wake of the automaker's massive emissions scandal. The DOJ is seeking billions in damages over VW's air-pollution violations. [New York Times] * According to Ethan Couch's lawyer, it may be weeks or months before the affluenza teen returns to the United States. A judge issued a temporary stay in his case after Couch argued that being deported from Mexico would somehow violate his civil rights. [CNN] * Robert Wonsch, an Oklahoma process server, was arrested after allegedly coercing his female clients into performing sex acts in exchange for lowering his fees. He's now facing several criminal counts. Good Lord, talk about ineffective service of process... [Reuters] * Dale Bumpers, President Clinton's impeachment defense lawyer, RIP. [New York Times]
